What does Brexit mean for GDPR?

Now that the UK has left the European Union many businesses are asking what effect this will have on GDPR. The short answer is none. The UK has already enshrined the principles of the GDPR into law via the Data Protection Act 2018 (DPA 2018).

The DPA 2018 is very similar to the GDPR in it's requirements.

If you are a UK business or organisation that already complies with the GDPR and has no contacts or customers in the European Economic Area (EEA), the change over will be straightforward. You simply need to continue to comply with the GDPR and you will comply with the DPA 2018.

If you are a UK business or organisation with an office, branch or other established presence in the EEA, or if you have customers in the EEA, you now need to comply with both UK and EU data protection regulations.
